Sailing

Take a ride back into history on a traditional outrigger canoe. The building of these traditional canoes has almost died out and few are left to tell the story of great voyages across the Pacific.

Traders´ Ridge has one of the few available in Micronesia for visitors to first hand experience the thrill of sailing one of these great canoes.

Modern sailboats are also available for rental at the Activity Center for a little day sail on Chamarro bay.

Traditional Sailing Canoe

The absolute ultimate in sailing adventures! This is a must-sail during your visit to Yap. Five traditional navigators from the outer island of Satawal take you on an authentic catamaran sailing canoe. This type of ancient marine sailing is truly becoming a lost art as Yap is one of the few places left in the world with this style of sea-worthy vessel. Utilitarian in nature and artistic in form, the people of Oceania used these catamarans for transportation and sea ceremonials. The craftmanship of this canoe is breathtaking...it is hand-carved, crafted together with natural fiber, and decorated with geometric designs painted in natural clay pigments. Glean from these expert sailors the art and technique of this historical tradition as you navigate the tropical waters of Yap.
